Staticscale LLC ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Surf Report service, including our website at surf-status.com and our email notification services (collectively, the "Service").

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service. Please read this policy carefully. By using the Service, you consent to the data practices described in this policy.

When you subscribe to our email notifications, we collect:

Information Collected Automatically

When you use our website, we automatically collect:

Usage data via Google Analytics 4: Pages viewed, features used, location changes, and general interaction patterns
Device information: Browser type, screen size, and operating system (collected anonymously via analytics)
IP address: Temporarily stored for rate limiting to prevent abuse (automatically deleted after the rate limit window expires, typically within one hour)
Bot detection data: When subscribing to email notifications, Cloudflare Turnstile collects interaction data solely for bot detection purposes

Local Storage

We store the following data locally in your browser (not sent to our servers):

Theme preference: Your light/dark mode selection
Cached data: Temporary ocean conditions data for faster loading (expires after 5 minutes)

What we DO NOT collect: We do not collect your name, physical address, phone number, payment information, or any other personal information beyond what is listed above.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Send you email notifications (daily digests and/or surf alerts) based on your preferences
Personalize your experience by showing conditions for your selected location
Analyze usage patterns to improve the Service
Maintain and troubleshoot the Service
Communicate with you about Service-related matters

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes.

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration): Tide data and buoy readings
National Weather Service (NWS): Weather forecasts and conditions
National Data Buoy Center (NDBC): Wave and water temperature data
CDIP (Coastal Data Information Program): Spectral wave data for California buoys
Open-Meteo: Marine weather data
Sunrise-Sunset.org: Sun times calculation

These are government and public data sources that do not receive any user data from us.

CartoDB/CARTO: Map tile imagery (Privacy Policy)
jsDelivr/unpkg: JavaScript library delivery (CDNs)

5. Cookies and Tracking

Cookies: We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising purposes. Google Analytics may set cookies for analytics purposes according to their privacy policy. GA4 cookies are configured to expire after 28 days.

Local Storage: We use browser local storage to save your theme preference and cache ocean data temporarily. This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to us.

Do Not Track: We do not currently respond to "Do Not Track" browser signals.

6. Email Communications

If you subscribe to our email notifications, you will receive:

A welcome/confirmation email when you subscribe
Daily digest emails and/or surf alert emails based on your preferences

Opting Out

You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time by:

Clicking the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of any email
Updating your preferences using the "Update Preferences" link in any email

When you unsubscribe, your email address and all associated data will be deleted from our database.
